I have taught classes on how to make your own Porcelain Raku Beads for 10 years at my studio in Mexico. These necklaces are so unique and rich in surface and color. A whole lot of work goes into making these raku beads.

First I form them by hand from Kai porcelain. I then run them through an electric kiln firing. When cool enough to touch I glaze them with special raku glazes made by hand. Firing them is tricky. I have invented a bead tree that can withstand the intensity of the raku firing. After loading the tree with only about 30 beads I then raku the entire thing in my raku kiln. When the beads are shiny and white hot I take the tree out of the very very hot kiln and place it in a metal garbage can with some saw dust and newspapers. Poof! After it all ignites I put the top on the garbage can. Because the fire burns up all the available oxygen in the can it consumes whatever it can find in the glaze work. Thus comes all the magnificent coppers and other iridescence. If that isn't enough brutality after about a half hour I take the tree out of the cans and plunge it into cold water. Lots of things can and do go wrong. Too bad I can't find a way to create jewelry out of two or more beads stuck together.

Besides the handmade fired and twice raku beads this necklace also includes beads of bone, pearls (both natural, man made and glass),green turquoise, copper and jade.

The beads are primitive and handmade looking which totally offsets the formality of the pearls and design. The necklace is so rich in texture that you won't be able to keep your hands off of it. The golden color of the pearls and turquoise raku beads are completely complimented by the bone ring beads, bronzed pearls and pure copper beads. These necklaces are unlike others and look so opulent around the neck. Very rich in appearance they always get comments every time I put one on. No two are exact but some ladies like to wear two at once which is a real show stopper. One worn slightly longer than the other is a very expensive look. This necklace has a lovely carved turtle bone bead making it oh so special and unique.
