A fragment of sea pottery combined with a small shell bead and a drift of smaller beads, against a distressed 'patchwork' background, form the design for this pretty and original brooch.

The well-worn sea pottery at the heart of this design features a faded blue on white design. Scraps of fabric in similar shades have been 'bonded' to a felt background by use of an embellisher machine. The fabric scarps were torn to provide distressed edges - further distressed by the embellisher. The brooch has been edged in blanket stitch using a fine cream crochet thread. The same thread has been used to stitch over areas of the fabric background - to ensure a firm fix and to enhance the design. Simple cross stitch and areas of open darning have been used. A swirl of beads, in a similar blend of colours, is stitched to enfold the china and shell.

The back of the brooch is neatened with commercial felt and a brooch pin is securely stitched in place. This brooch is one of a series, but, due to the individual backgrounds, and unique nature of the glass, china or shells used, no two will ever be the same!
