Its contents begin with ancient civilations and end with the age of revolution, including the Industrial Revolution. Chapters explore such topics as "The Beginnings of Rome, The Rise of Christianity, The Feudal System, The Influence of the Church, The Period of the Renaissance, The Elizabethan Aage, The World in 1600, and Frederick the Great and the Rise of Prussia.
