Haida Frog by Bernhard Rohne
Acid Etched Metal and Brass
Circa late 60s/early 70s

This is an earlier work of renowned artist, Bernhard Rohne. It features a handcrafted Pacific Northwest Indian Haida frog symbol for prosperity. The authentic and elaborate tribal design is made from brass. The relief is a wash of dark colors and the result of a chemical reaction between the metal sheet and acid. This piece is tribal, yet the use of dark colors and heavy metals give it a distinct 1970s brutalist perspective.

The panel measures 11.5" x 11.5". The frame is minimal and made from black plastic. The back of the piece has additional information about the work which identifies the artist and his studio: Metallic Design Studio, North Vancouver, B.C. Canada.

Bernard Rohne immigrated to Canada from West Germany in 1967. His work with Metallic Design Studio began in 1969. He is also known for his furniture designs that feature oxidized metals and etched designs in brass and copper. More information is available at bernhardrohne.com

Condition: Good - Very Good. The surface of the metal plate has some light surface marks/scratches. They are not overly apparent due to the metal's matte finish and the dark colors of the acid swirls. The plastic frame has separated at the upper left corner but can easily be repaired. The label on the back of the piece is ripped but readable. The brass frog can be polished if the new owner desires a brighter, shinier appearance.
