This 9-1/2" letter opener was originally found in the wood pile destined for the wood stove - luckily I rescued it thinking it might have some potential.
It's Tanoak - the cleanup revealed some lovely, crazy grain! This unusual pattern is caused by 'spalting' which is a discoloration caused by fungi. Spalted wood is highly sought after by woodworkers and I very nearly burned this piece! Very smooth, too interesting to do anything more to it than to give it a nice shape and let the grain entertain.

Notholithocarpus densiflorus, commonly known as Tanoak, is an evergreen tree in the beech family, closely related to the north temperate oaks, Quercus. A native of the western US, it grows in Southwest Oregon and throughout California, primarily in the Coastal Ranges and the Sierra Nevada.
