Purple Pansy Teacup and Saucer I E & C Co Hand Painted Japan Dated 1868-1912 RARE

Stamped green IE&C mark with a wreath JAPAN and Hand Painted. Porcelain bearing the IE&C mark spans a period of time inclusive of what Nippon collectors like to refer to as pre-Nippon, Nippon and post Nippon. to be more specific, a timeline of approximately 40 years from 1885 to 1925. When manufacturers registered their porcelain to Nippon marks in the first 10 years of the 20th century, IE &C chose not to change from Japan to Nippon.

IE&C items tend to be Art Nouveau but non-typical when compared to the majority of Nippon era export items destined for North America.

Japan, as country of origin, was originally used and maintaineed by the firm because the product was not intended for the American market.

The porcelain has a faint gray-blue cast or tone and impurities in the clay, but this was quite typical for the wares of the early period works spanning the years 1868-1912. this was probably unavoidable given the low level of clay develpment technology in Japan at the time. Ont eh other hand, though the underneath may not have been so good, when it came to the painting, this piece was decorated extremely painstakingly, with elaborate, exquisite skill and refinement. IE &C chose to ignor ethe demand for art deco and is heavily influenced by the art nouveau style of decoration.

This teacup and saucer produced by IE&C has been shown to be early period works (1868-1912) characterized by an ashen colour of not particularly good quality but decorated painstakingly, with elaborate, exquisite skill and refinement.

The cup measures approx 4" x 2" with a 1 1/2" long gold trimmed handle. The saucer measures 5 1/2" diameter. It is in excellent vintage condition with no cracks, no chips and no crazing. Any imperfections are in the making as stated in the above description.

The hand painting is exquisite! The purple and lavender lilacs and green stems and leaves are bright and there are raised paint areas which adds to the beauty and dimension of the hand painting.

This beautiful teacup and saucer is an object of art and a piture of our collective past. Rare piece that you would love to add to your collection!
