BACKGROUND

What makes these rings special? Robert (Bob) Dodd, who began making them in the 1930's out of vintage and antique celluloid toothbrush handles, hand mirrors, hair combs, piano keys, etc.

Celluloid is a semi-synthetic plastic that predates Bakelite and began being produced in 1870 to replace ivory.

Bob's rings are featured on page 60 of the Celluloid Collectors Reference and Value Guide and are on display at the National Plastics Museum in Massachusetts.

Each ring is made by hand - without the use of molds or melting - by cutting up the raw materials listed above, filing them, piecing them together, and filing them again... a process that took master craftsman, Bob, a day or more to complete.

Bob passed away at 92 and left a legacy of incredible folk art. He's dearly missed, but his passion lives on in those of us who appreciate and wear his work!

DETAILS

The ring for sale here is marked "DODD" and is a size 8-1/2 as measured by a ring sizer; however, it fits more accurately as an 8 due to the wide band/top. It is in great, sturdy condition. Please keep in mind that, because the ring is handmade from old materials, it is not new and may have non-structural flaws that (I believe) add to its folk-art character.

SHIPPING

The ring will be mailed via USPS priority. If you'd like the package to be insured, please contact me prior to your purchase to calculate that additional fee.
