Sumi ink is a permanent, black ink, made from lamp soot or vegetable oil soot mixed with glue and water. Another form is a resin stick made from pine soot and resin. Both types are traditional inks used for sumi-e brush painting. The paintings are usually sparse black lines and spacious white space to give impressions of the natural world as landscapes, animals, and plants. It looks easy, but, believe me, the aesthetic is strict and technique exacting. This roving is very black with some tiny hairs of white to give a little textural look.

This listing is for one skein with a weight of 4.3 oz., spun at a DK weight and wrapping at about 12-14. The wool is blended with suri alpaca and mohair which give this yarn a halo at certain angles.

See my Store Policy FAQs section for further knitting gauge suggestions for various yard weights, a bit about sheep breeds and yarn softness and care instructions for different fibers.

My skeins are wound on a full 2-yard niddy-noddy. If you don’t have a large swift, let me know. Spun in a smoke-free, pet-friendly home.
