The look is a distinctive one - for a lighthouse, maybe not so much for a pepper mill. However, I think this mill carries it very well. It takes its inspiration from the boldly marked lighthouse towers that dot so many of this countries and the world's shorelines. It began as a playful experiment with aspen. A wood not always considered to be of fine quality due to its softness and grain flow.

One of the most redeeming qualities this mill has to offer is in how light plays off the end grain of the Aspen and Cherry. There is a kind of shimmer that results from rotating the mill under the light. You can see a bit of it happening in the above photographs if you look closely. It is something unique and quite beautiful.

The base, as well as the platform and lantern housing of this mill are all made from richly toned, Black Walnut, finished with a bright, natural sheen. The housing seats itself below the ridge-line of the platform. The platform on this mill is unique in that it has a well-shaped interior. This forms a small funnel to collect and guide the peppercorns when filling the mill. The light section is Ash - a favorite for this purpose. The design takes its lead from the original Fresnel lenses used in period lanterns. The repeating patterns of the Ash grain enhances the theme nicely.

This is a tall pepper mill. It stands at about 15 and 5/8 th's inches. At the base it measures about 3 inches. The grinding mechanism in this pepper mill is stainless steel with an aluminum shaft made here in the USA. A polycarbonate mechanism for use with salt or other spices could be substituted. Let me know at the time of purchase if that is your preference.

As with all my pepper mills, this is a production of one, all handmade by myself. I don't make jigs or plans for each mill. They are made at the peak of my inspiration and this is the end result. Over the years I have found that, (and come to terms with), I am incapable of repeating anything the same twice. You can be confident in knowing that each mill I make will be unique all its own.

I appreciate your interest. And welcome any questions you may have.
