Kokeshi dolls are hand carved wooden dolls, traditionally from Northern Honshū on the main island of Japan. They were first created 150 years ago, originally made as toys for children of farmers. They're a styled doll with no arms or legs - a cylindrical body with large head - made of cherry, dogwood or Japanese maple that represent young girls. There are 11 traditional types of Kokeshi, characteristic to specific regions. Kokeshi dolls have become a famous Japanese craft and are popular Japanese souvenirs. They have become quite collectible, especially the older ones like this example.
