Full title: THE COMPLETE WORKS OF WILLIAM SHAKSPEARE: with Dr. Johnson’s Preface; A Glossary, and an Account of Each Play, and a Memoir of the Author, by the Rev. William Harness, M.A., of Christ’s College, Cambridge, and Minister of St. Panchras Parochial Chapel, Regent Square. With a Portrait from the Chandos Picture, Engraved by Cochran, and Forty Illustrations, from Designs by Smirke, Westall, Corbould, Stephanoff, and Wright. (“Cheap Edition”) New York: George F. Cooledge, & Brother; London: Scott, Webster, & Geary [n.d., circa 1847]. Royal octavo (9.5” x 6”). 926 pp. Frontispiece engraved portrait of Shakespeare with tissue (foxed), with 40 additional engraved illustrations on separate facing pages throughout text (last illustration, “A Lover’s Complaint,” not listed in table of contents).

Original sheep leather binding with black morocco label, gilt lettering (“Shakspeare’s Works”), gilt spine rules and gilt dentilles on all binding edges; marbled endpapers and paper edge. Contains 37 plays and all poetry. (The untitled poem conventionally named “The Phoenix and the Turtle” appears at the end of “Passionate Pilgrim”; the play “The Two Noble Kinsmen,” now commonly attributed to John Fletcher and William Shakespeare, is not included due to its controversial authorship at the time of publication.)

Good [stain in leather on top spine edge which shows in text on several pages; cover and edge rub; original owners’ signatures in pen (“Abbey A. Hull”) and pencil (“Mary A. Rose”) on front free end paper; original owner’s name scratched off front paste down with date below (“January 1848”); contents moderately foxed, but text clear and legible.] Binding secure. Complete. Engraved plates are foxed on edges, crisply printed on extra heavy weight paper; the images are indeed well done and very interesting.

The type of volume found in pre-Civil War parlors, along with the Bible and Milton's Paradise Lost. Nice gift for Shakespeare enthusiast, collector.
