Some Glass when exposed to strong UV will “purple.” Many of the earlier canisters have a purple tint because of the use of manganese as a clarifying agent prior to 1917.This is referred to as “sun purpled.”

Colonial is the most commonly seen style of canister (jar) produced for the Hoosier Manufacturing Company, maker of the Hoosier Cabinet. These jars were manufactured by the Sneath Glass Co. of Hartford City, Indiana for Hoosier cabinets (probably circa 1920). The jar and lid are in excellent vintage condition and the lid attaches firmly.

Whether the kitchen is country, shabby chic, rustic, eclectic, mission or even minimalist style, this piece will add architectural design interest and historic charm. Muted purpling lends added charm.

Approximately 5.5 inches tall.
