The old 'ghost net' patterned fishing floats make marvelous collectibles. Being a work of natural art, in which nature used the wind and sand as her paint brush, and the glass as her canvas, each one is different - each one is precious. Noticing the resemblance of this one to a marble, I couldn't help but call it 'Marbled Amulet' as it seems one which holds dreams, history, and wishes.

Marbled Amulet measures 3-3/8" diameter or 10-1/2" in circumference. It's the size of a good orange, beautifully round, and feels like silk in the hand! In a light aqua blue or very light cerulean, this wonderful hand blown Japanese collectible is loaded with refined, tiny, champagne bubbling as well as some larger bubbles. See photo #5 for several of the larger bubbles which appear ready to drip right out of the glass! You may also observe a portion of the lovely, reflective 'pearl' or bubble of glass, internal (opposite the 'eye' of the seal) and peaking out from the base.

The delightful bubbling is mentioned because the float would stand nicely on its own with the bubbling, high gloss luster of the antique quality glass, and color alone. However, once nature got done with her 'painting', this lovely float becomes almost irresistible. The float indeed wears a 'ghost net' pattern now from decades of sand-blasting between the tines of the net it once wore. This incredible marbled pattern emerged slowly....decade by decade, creating the 'frosted' puzzle or marbled pattern for us to enjoy.

The glass shows normal wear from decades of toil and journey at sea. It also shows an 'imbedded object' on one side, a little over an inch from the edge of the seal. Imbedded objects are coveted by many collectors. They may be tiny pieces of sand, minute bits of rock, crushed shell, bits of seaweed or foliage suspended in space-time within the glass, bits of wool, fabric, oven brick, ash or even wire! Yet the glass remains intact and fully water tight! This 'object' is black and 'leggy' - without my 'spy' glass (which the Grandson probably left outside bug watching) I'm unable to identify it. Let's just say it's a mystery and certainly - finding an imbedded object in an old float is an opportunity to make a wish!

As if there wasn't enough to love about Marbled Amulet, there is also the signed/mark on the seal 'button'. Only about 20% of floats, it is said, were ever marked. Arabic numerals were often used to mark floats. Interestingly there is one called a 'mirror image 2' or 'reverse 2' in which the '2' appears perfectly backwards. Most other Arabic numerals employed range from 1 to 6.

I've come across the 'backwards 2' a number of times, but here is a lovely, clear strike in a 'forward 2'. Nicely scripted and undamaged. See photo #3. I took some close ups, but not enough space to display more photos. The seal 'button' is thick glass, nicely rounded and well placed. It is free of nicks, chips, and grazing to the surround edge! Hooray! Mint condition with a lovely mark. If the number '2' has special meaning for you, here's another opportunity to make a wish or '2'!

Thank you for helping to care for vintage fishing floats which are rapidly being replaced with plastic or synthetic floats.

COMBINED SHIPPING: Yes - I will combine! Floats of generally similar size & weight can be combined so you save on shipping. These decisions are made at the actual time of packing, using my best judgment to keep items safe from damage in transit, protecting them maximally. Best option is to pay the shipping on each item up front. A shipping refund will be issued promptly via Paypal when your parcels are complete. My customers will confirm I am happy to do this. If this doesn’t work for you, convo for a ‘guesstimate’ on combined shipping of items.

CANADA: USPS has omitted insurance from the economy (1st Class International) shipping category. Priority International is the next best available method yet not cost effective in my opinion, unless purchasing two or three items & combining shipping. Please convo for a quote if interested. My sincere apologies!
