Featured is a circa 1936 Replogle Standard Globe. Replogle Globe Company has been in business since 1930, although their own Globe Dating Page only goes back to 1939 http://www.replogleglobes.com/howOldIsYourGlobe.php . I used the George F. Cram.com website to date this globe. This Replogle globes was made in Chicago, Illinois, and the cartographer is not listed

In dating the globe, Replogle was reflecting the name change from Ethiopia to Italian East Africa, which happened in 1936 and does NOT reflect the German Annex of Austria and Czechoslovakia, which occurred in 1939, prior to the start of World War II.

This Replogle Globe reflects a unique time in history when Radio was KING. This Replogle Globe features International Radio Broadcasting Stations, giving users the ability to “tune in” the world’s events. The Art Deco globe features other unique items such as: Caravan Routes, Steam ship Routes, Railroads and Canals. Later versions showed air traffic routes. The Globe also reflects other historical events, such as Colombus’ Landing in 1492, Lindberg’s Flight on May 20-21, 1927 and a dates of the South Pole being reached by sled by Amundsen and Scott and by plane by Byrd in 1929, just to name a few.

This beautiful globe does have condition issues, as you will see in pictures. There is a nickel sized tear over the U.S., removing Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Tennessee. A layer of color appears to be removed in places, making the appearance blotchy (oddly enough, it was what caught my attention.) At the Equator, there is some separation of the paper sections.

The Globe features a semi-meridian and a Time Dial at the North Pole. The metal meridian and base does show wear and rust from years past. In spite all the flaws, the globe turns smoothly on its axis and is firmly secured into its round base.
T
his Replogle Globe captures a unique moment in history, when the world was poised at the edge of another World War, our nation was recovering from the Great Depression and Aviation was just for the Thrill-seekers!

Globes can be an excellent way to introduce children to the world and are fun educational tools. They also make a stunning focal point used as home décor or grouped together as a collection.
