In Greek mythology Persephone is the daughter of Zeus and the Mother Earth goddess Demeter. Hades, god of the Underworld asks Zeus for Persephone's hand in marriage, but when he doesn't consent, Hades sprits Persephone away to the underworld. When Demeter finds out about what happened, she neglects her duties to the Earth which plummets into drought and famine. Fearful for the mortals on Earth, Zeus pleads with Hades to release Persephone. He declares that Persephone and Hades' marriage is void unless Persephone eats from Hades' garden.

Naturally, Hades tricks Persephone into eating a pomegranate, which ties her to the Underworld, making it so that each year she must return to the Underworld...which brings Demeter's sadness and marks the start of the winter. When it is time for her to return to the Earth, she helps Demeter spread life and vegetation.

This double-sided art doll is the perfect addition to a Montessori springtime literature shelf, or a great gift for the art historian or mythology buff in your life. On one side, she is the playful, innocent daughter of Demeter, and on the other, she is the magnificent Queen of the Underworld.
