A RARE MATCHED PAIR OF SIGNED YSL BLACK HAIR COMBS DESIGNED BY ROGER SCEMAMA FOR YVES SAINT LAURENT, circa early 1970s

This sale is for a pair of vintage palm design hair combs, designed by Roger Scemama for Yves Saint Laurent in the early 1970s.

SIZE AND CONDITION: 3½ x 2 ins; old store stock (unworn except by my mannequin) may have minor surface marks due to being in storage but good vintage condition overall with no splits or chips.

This wonderful pair of combs is made in glossy black and is inspired by the OP ART of the 1960s. They look wonderful thrust into a classic French pleat as seen on the mannequin.

MORE INFORMATION:

The successor to the Parisian fashion House of Dior, Yves Saint Laurent opened his own house in 1962 and launched his ready to wear Rive Gauche line on he left bank of Paris in 1966. He was the first of the Paris couturiers to create a ready-to-wear collection outside of his main shows.

Roger Scemama began working in Paris with Yves Saint Laurent in the 1960s. For YSLs African inspired collection of 1967 he created jewellery and ornaments with wooden and plastic beads. During the 1960s, an Op Art fashion "revolution" swept across Europe. Rebelling against traditional-looking jewelry of the past, designers crafted "anti-jewelry" made of materials like plastic, wood, paper, aluminum, leather and even PVC. Geometric forms like circles, squares, spirals replaced idealistic, naturalistic forms, and the favourite colours of the time were brilliant, acid-coloured enamels combined with black and white.

Jewellery and accessories have always been an important part of the Saint Laurent look. Working with Scemama, the company created bold pieces using wood and plastic, and in basic "building block" shapes like cubes and spheres. In the late 1960s both OP ART and Flower Power turned up in the form of brightly coloured plastic and stark black and white pieces. In 1970 Scemama produced these celluloid hair combs for YSL in bright colours and in OP ART black, white and metallics.
