The Medal of Immaculate Conception, commonly known as the Miraculous Medal, is worn in honor of the Virgin Mary in hopes that prayers to her will be answered and miracles will occur.
The Miraculous Medal was created from the description of three visions received by a Parisian novice nun, Sister Catherine Laboure, in 1830. She later became St. Catherine.
The front shows Mary standing on a half globe and crushing the head of a snake, representing that Satan and his followers are powerless before her. The year, 1830, is stamped on the globe. The phrase, "O Marie concue sans peché, Priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous"" (meaning "O Mary Conceived Without Sin Pray For Us Who Have Recourse To Thee"), encircles the front of the medal.
On the reverse, a portrait of PIUS X P MAX.
Approx 1.8 cm tall =11/16 of an inch diam without top loop or bail
