-- Brief History on Bakelite --
Bakelite is a plastic invented in the early 1900s by Dr. Leo Baekeland. It is the first synthetic plastic and very durable and versatile. It was used for telephones, game pieces, electrical cords, jewelry and even used for the dashboard in the first Mercedes Benz car.

During the depression when many could not afford Cartier, Tiffany and the likes, Bakelite jewelry became very popular among wealthy and the poor. In 1942, the Catalin-Bakelite Corp. responsible for 70% of Bakelite Costume jewelry, ceased production.

Bakelite jewelry is now highly sought after and collected.
