The earliest German nutcrackers were made in the Erzgebirge region and date from the early 19th century. This vintage wooden nutcracker was handcrafted by Vokmar Matthes in West Germany and stands 15-1/4” tall.

The gentleman is wearing a black felt top hat and supports a white beard made of real fur. A wooden lever in the back opens and closes the mouth to crack the nuts. His piercing blue eyes and fierce demeanor evoke the traditional significance of the figurines when they were given to family and friends for good luck and to offer protection for the home.

The original string tag is still attached and says “Matthes, 7151 Affalterbach, Wolfsolden". This figurine was probably made in the 1970s, possibly earlier.

The left ankle has a small area where some black paint has been touched up due to peeling, otherwise, he is in good vintage condition.
