Do you "know" Bakelite? Have you rubbed your thumb hard on its surface and smelled that weird hot radio smell? Have you clunked a couple of Bakelite bangles together and grinned at the sound? Have you tested and re-tested to make sure it's authentic period Bakelite? Yes? Then join the club! No? Then let me introduce you to an amazing material that started life in the early 1900s as an industrial plastic and wound up being used to make millions pieces of costume jewelry before, during and after World War II.

When I was actively collecting Bakelite I was a sucker for hanging pins! Whether it was a bunch of cherries, an intaglio of a Scotty dog or an elegant Art Deco design, if it dangled and moved freely, it was mine!

This hanging pin is the most elegant in my collection. It is Art Deco in feel and probably dates from the 30s. It is an unusual color, Oxblood actually. Usually we see Oxblood as opaque, but in this example the Oxblood is semi-transparent with a hint of a black swirl for dimension and depth. I can't say if the hanging hardware is original. I doubt it. But I can guarantee that it is exactly as I bought it in 1994.

It measures 2.5"x1.5" and closes with a simple C clasp. I will include two pin stoppers to ensure that it stays on your clothing. Enjoy!

If this lovely pin is a gift for someone special in your life let me know and I will gift wrap it for you.
