This Sampler quilt design is Mom's very favorite quilt to make, since each square is different. She has made many quilts like this, but no two have ever been - or will ever be - exactly alike! Mom made this Sampler with a background of various crisp, white tonal cotton fabrics. Mom's Sampler makes a big, bold statement....the blocks are big (12"), the borders are 15" deep with large vines and flowers, and there are thirty-six different blocks with various geometric and appliqué quilt designs in many lively colors. Mom's 'trademark' on this quilt is the fabulous appliquéd border. It includes a running green vine with more than 150 assorted leaves and 28 flowers. Mom has never counted up the hours she spends making all of the appliqué pieces, but I know that not many of us would be able to match her commitment to her sewing! She used white cotton with a tiny tonal vine print for the backing and the binding. This quilt is quite large, and measures about 102.5" x 103.5". A queen mattress measures 60" x 80", so this quilt will give you a big 21" dropping on the sides and at the foot. A King mattress is 76" x 80", so the drop would be 13" on the sides, which may not be enough; it's a good idea for you to hold a measure to the side of your bed to see if the drop is what you want. Mom uses her sewing machine to piece her quilt tops, and makes her appliqué pieces by ironing under the edges and carefully sewing them down on the squares - she does not fuse them on. We use her long-arm quilter to quilt.
