Clipper ship development began in the early 19th century in response to the greater demands for speed by merchants. Clipper ships were known for their sharp bows, sleek hulls and many square sails allowing them to achieve impressive speeds without the aid of steam engines. The Clipper ship is often considered the pinnacle of naval achievement and human ingenuity in the Age of Sail.

This listing features my latest hand-carved, stylized Clipper ship. The clipper hull is carved from a solid 12”x2”x2” rectangular African mahogany block. The completed hull is finished with natural Shellac. The sails are hand-cut from 1/16” basswood and formed to create the illusion of catching wind the sails. The sails are finished with natural Danish Oil. The rigging is completed using dark brown button thread and brass nails. The model also includes the hand-made display base finished with natural Danish Oil and Shellac.

The Photos for this listing were taken outside, indoors in natural light, and indoors with low sunlight and artificial light. I did this for two reasons: to get a sense of how the model will appear in doors in different lighting, and outdoors for maximum sunlight to draw out natural grain patterns of Mahogany and carving detail.

The model measures approximately 12.25” high from base to main mast, 14” in length from bow sprit to stern, 3” wide.
