1976 Cultured Marble Etching - J K Thompson Jr - Kansas City Scene

During the 1970s, John K. Thompson Jr. created several different montages for some American cities. They were etched by the artist on a slab of cultured or composition marble. The resulting images, like this one, are incredible. He manages to fill his marble canvas with so many of the landmarks and buildings for which the city is known.

Some of his cityscapes that I was able to find online were Pittsburgh, Chicago, and St. Louis. All of them were a much larger size (usually around 16” x 20”), hand etched and part of a limited edition, complete with number. Those pieces are quite valuable -- running into hundreds of dollars.

This is a smaller one of Kansas City, Missouri. It is 9-½” x 11” and does not have a number. It is signed by Thompson and has a date, 1976 as well as the copyright date of 1978. I’m assuming that this is not an original but is a smaller unnumbered copy. Even though it is smaller and not a numbered edition, it is still quite a picture!

It features so many of Kansas City’s famous landmarks: Royals Stadium, Country Club Plaza, the Art Institute, Union Station, Liberty Memorial and The Scout are just a few. If you have ever lived there or have visited, you should enjoy discovering all of the special places in this amazingly detailed collage! This would also make a great gift.

The etched marble picture is mounted on a burgundy velvet background and framed in wood with a gold metallic rim around the outside edge.

Condition: Back has a saw tooth hanger. Paper is a little stained and torn. The metal on front of frame (particularly bottom) has some pretty heavy scuffing. Might be worth having reframed. I’m sure the frame is probably original and seems to be similar to the ones used on his other pictures. But, it is very 70’s! If you like the look and don’t mind the scuffing then it is ready to go.

Size: Framed - 14-½” x 13-¼”
Picture - 11” x 9-½”
