This sampler now belongs to Mrs. Katherine Butzner Hardenburgh, who is Lucy Redd's fourth great granddaughter. All of the information here was given to us by Mrs. Hardenburgh.
I chose 27 Count unbleached (brown) linen for the sampler. It closely resembled the original. Of course, some of the hand-dyed fabrics made today would be lovely. DMC floss was used for the stitching, using two strands over two threads. The over dyes of today and silks would be wonderful as well. Stitches in the sampler are cross, rice, Algerian eyelet, and straight stitch. The Stitch Count is 297 Wide X 273 High, yielding a 23" wide X 21" high sampler. First VERSE - "Teach me to feel anothers woe, To hide the fault I see, That Mercy I to others show, That mercy show to me.
A second VERSE reads, "If I am right they grace impart, stil in the right to stay my heart, To find that better way and a third VERSE reads, "Save me alike from foolish pride, And impious discontent, At aught thy wisdom has denied, Or aught they goodness lent.
