This is a Hotchkiss No. 1 Paper Fastener, from the E. H. Hotchkiss Co. in Norwalk, CT. The patent for this staplers was established in1925 and as you can see in picture number 5 this one has not yet been patented. Therefore, I believe this to be an earlier model or at least from the 1920's. It is rusted on the top and not as shiny as other well preserved models, but I think it adds character to the piece. The base of the stapler has the name of the company and the logo "H" carved and painted red. I am not sure if it works, but it is sure a collector's item. There are staples available on E-bay.

This stapler or paper fastener, as it was first called, was a beautiful find of my 9 year old at a estate sale in Ohio.
