Signed Miles R Greer Folk Art Bird Carving - California Artist - Blue Jay - Goncalo Alves and Manzanita Wood

This sculpture is a spectacular example of the bird carvings for which California artist, Miles Greer is known. His pieces are described so many ways--as mid century or Danish modern, sometimes as folk art. The truth is that this carving would look beautiful in any home or office. The carved bird does resemble a sleek Danish modern style--it is stark, polished and warm--which makes for a great contrast to the amazing gnarly wood burl or stump that serves as its stand. This piece was most likely created during the 1970s.

This actually still has the descriptive booklet that came with it--someone thoughtfully taped it to the base so it would not be lost. I gently lifted the booklet up and underneath, carved into the wood is Miles Greer’s signature. The booklet has so much information about the man and mostly about the woods used for this carving! The information on page 3 was hand written, presumably by Mr. Greer.

1st Page--The first page of the booklet shows a photo of the artist and says Hand Crafted By (the word “hand” and part of “crafted” are missing but are obviously what it originally said) Miles R. Greer California Artist.

2nd Page: “Like people, hardwoods are an imperfect material. Even the most rare and exotic woods have flaws and imperfections. Yet, sometimes these very characteristics give the sculpture its own uniqueness. We trust you will understand this when making your selection.

When signed by the artist, this sculpture makes an ideal gift of long-lasting quality, and is truly a collectible item.”

The Goncalo Alves wood is also known as tigerwood or zebrawood because of the dramatic striped appearance. Obviously very popular wood for cabinets, handles and furniture. The Mexican Manzanita is a southwestern shrub which can grow quite large and twisted. It can be found in California. The wood from the Manzanita is also used for furniture.

Condition: Excellent. Booklet has a small amount of damage to the front probably due to tape and will still have tape on the pages if it is removed. However, it is very unusual for the booklet to be present at all and except for the tape, it is in really good, readable condition.
