This sculpture is from my "calm and quiet mind" series of pieces depicting friends practicing meditation.

He is not a fully enlightened being. He is a contemporary man doing his best to be a wholesome person, master his mind and live in wisdom with life's continuous flow of changes.

This is a hand built sculpture made from recycled stoneware clay, under glaze and local clay slip fired to cone 6. It measures 14.5 inches tall by 14.5 inches deep by 13 inches wide.

The process of making this involved sitting together with my friend and coming into an authentic and mindful state. At a random moment in our sitting, I quietly got up and photographed him as reference to later build the sculpture. The title "Things are a little rough right now" was how he had been feeling the day we sat together. He had been going through a difficult time, and because of how well he has trained his mind through meditation, he was dealing with his challenges quite well. I did my best to sculpt him in a way that reflected the external difficulties in a rough, unrefined surface, while showing the deep peace and equanimity he maintains in his facial expression.

Learning vipassana meditation was a turning point in my life and continues to be a useful tool for maintaining a balanced mind. Practicing meditation is not always pristine, clear and beautiful. Part of my intention is to make work that reflects the stoic, statuesque stillness and strength that people maintain while sitting through different states of being. The piece reflects a single moment in a vast flow of constant changes in mind and body. Some moments are challenging, uncomfortable and mucky, some are simple and ordinary while other moments are blissful, expansive, and transcendental. Regardless of the experience that is sculpted into the surface, the sitter is making an effort to see clearly that his state is impermanent and to accept the moment as it is. He is training himself to be able to face any situation with grace and wisdom.

I have a small meditation nook in my home studio. This piece has been sitting on a table right near my cushion, and when I open my eyes, I see this piece. I think "he's still sitting" which has inspired a stronger determination and a deeper practice when I'm feeling distracted.
