Ten large multicolor vintage glass beads which hang from a top hole that goes side to side. They are the traditional German colors of rose, green, and blue. The mock up shows old salvage Swarovski rose beads, which I don't have any more. I will send some matching beads, though, as a treat. These West German multicolor beads are 25x13x7.5mm. Ten of them can make a fabulous necklace. In fact, you can make two necklaces with five each.

The story behind the rose, blue and green combination that we frequently see in vintage German beads is fascinating. Originally, the Germans sold real Rhine stones, literally quartz stones that came from the Rhine. They were similar to Herkimer diamonds, except the "Rheinkiesel," as they were called, had frequent tourmaline inclusions of rose, blue and green. Eventually the nicer natural stones started to run out and tri-color paste or Strass crystal beads were made instead. (Strass, after the 18th century inventor of the faux rhinestone, George Friedrich Strass.) The rose, blue and green combination has remained a German vintage classic, not only in rhinestones, but in many drops, cabochons, and vintage beads.

Enjoy and thanks for visiting!
