This little vase is a gorgeous, unique, and one-of-a-kind gem from a recent wood-firing. It is approximately 5 inches tall and 4 inches wide at its widest point. It was wheel-thrown and the inside and neck of the vase have been glazed. The outside is unglazed, the color a result of the fire and salt during the firing process.

Wood-fired pottery is a unique type of pottery that is fired in a kiln where the heat generated comes entirely from burning wood. Cups of coarse salt were placed within the kiln, which vaporizes during the firing and covers the pots. Each firing generates different conditions within the kiln therefore no two pieces are ever alike. The color variation on the outside of each piece comes entirely from flames, ash, and salt. The fire reaches such a high temperature that the ash from the wood flows through the kiln and falls on the rims and shoulders of the vessels, and melts into a natural glaze where it lands. Each piece retrieved from the kiln is a visual record of the path and activity of the fire.

Wood firing is a lengthy, labor-intensive process. Depending on a number of factors, a firing may take twelve to thirty-six hours. A typical wood firing takes 3-4 days, with potters feeding the fire in shifts. Kiln temperatures reach nearly 2400ºF and consume several cords of wood. Wood-fired work is highly functional and is food, oven, and refrigerator safe. It is recommended that pieces used in the oven be placed in a cold, not pre-heated oven, to avoid cracking. Pieces are dishwasher safe, but hand washing is highly recommended.
