These beads come from Harer, an eastern city in Ethiopia, and were made conservatively between 80-100 years ago. Traditionally these are made by casting in halves and soldering them together in the middle, hence the seam on the beads. To keep their form they were filled with pitch, a petroleum or plant derived black resin. Not only does this preserve the shape, it also gives the beads a nice, slightly heavier weight. They are made of coin silver, a traditional mix of silver and other metals, and give off a nice shine when polished.

You will receive the exact beads you see pictured here.

They are temporarily strung on a black waxed cotton cord with an adjustable knot but are ultimately meant to be taken apart and used in your jewelry.

Each bead is between 24-25mm in length and 21-24mm in width.

These beads are indeed ancient pieces and their condition reflect that. Worn edges and weathering are a product of time and love...not defects.
