Nancy Drew Author Carolyn Keene

The Nancy Drew books were written by ghost writers. Stratemeyer gave all of them the name Carolyn Keene. So who was the first Carolyn Keene?

Her name was Mildred Wirt Benson. She was born in 1905 and grew up in a small town in Iowa.
While she was getting her master's degree in journalism, she began writing for Stratemeyer.
She would go on to write 23 of the first 30 Nancy Drew books (volumes 1-7, 11-25 and 30). Nancy Drew became a hit . Now, 80 years later, there have been more than 500 Nancy Drew mysteries written and the series are still popular!

Little Mildred, (Carolyn Keene), is ready to begin her writing venture dressed smartly in blue gray pleated style skirt with brown belt, and blue striped shirt. Her hair is fashioned in a 1930's style, her detailed face is painted by hand, and she holds two of her own written mysteries.

This tiny art character is only 4 1/2 inches tall, (11.4 cm)
