Raku ceramic button

This button features an impressed design of an evergreen sprig. It has an unglazed, carbon black background with a light gray, barely green glaze within the design and metallic green and faint copper luster in the depressions. Great contrasting glossy against a matte finish.

It's a bit hefty so needs to be used on a suitable fabric base. It would be a stunning embellishment for a bag, sweater or any high quality handmade item.
Extra large, 2" (53 mm) dia, 5 mm thickness, 2 mm sew thru holes. Initialed on back with year.

Not machine washable. While this button is not fragile, it is ceramic. If you bang it hard enough, it will break.

Modern Raku is a high fire process in which glowing, red hot pieces are removed from a kiln and placed in sawdust, dry leaves or shredded paper, where they instantly combust. They are then quickly covered allowing the smoke to react with the clay and glaze inside a sealed chamber. Metallic oxides are often an ingredient in the glaze, creating wonderful colors.

This item was handmade by me. It is initialed on the back. I have made hundreds of buttons for collectors, weavers and knitters. I am proud to say: My buttons have appeared in many publications including the newest, 2nd edition of 'The Big Book of Buttons' by Elizabeth Hughes and Marion Lester
