Here's another one in memory of our little work fox. At work (my other job) our office backs up to a very small section of woods. One fall, there were foxes out all over town. Most of them because they had mange, so you would see them out during the day. One of them, who a co-worker lovingly named Todd, had been struck by a car and his front leg was badly injured. He took solitude in the woods behind our building with a couple of other foxes. As though the mange weren't bad enough, he obviously wasn't getting the food he needed as he was terribly thin (even compared to the others). I tried to do what I could at the time, but after a few weeks he stopped showing up. We still saw the other two from time to time, but Todd never showed his precious face. I created this tile in memory of him and the hope that his suffering was quickly laid to rest.

It's is approximately 6x6 inches and 7/8 of an inch thick. It is low fired which means it shouldn't be used permanently outdoors or in areas that receive constant water (like a shower stall). It'd do great in any kitchen or bathroom back splash, hanging on a wall (there are holes in the back to hang it), in a shadow box frame (mom's favorite option), on a plate stand for a desk ornament or amidst your book collection.

The process used to make these is a different from my usual relief tiles that are made from an original mold. Instead here, I sketch my design and create acetate stencils for where I want each layer of the drawing to come forward. Then in the studio, I roll out my clay, cut the pieces with my stencils and start layering, one on top of the other so the end result is a design that pops out of the tile's background. This allows me to get more detailed with my designs and it saves my hands too!
