This gorgeous find is an old salt box , hand made from the 19th century
probably by an old farmer.
It is hand carved from a solid piece of oak.
The front is shaped with five planed sides going into a chamfer towards
the bottom.
It has a domed lid roughly the same shape as the receptacle and hinged with
leather straps which are showing signs of age.
The back is hand decorated with diamond shapes and surrounded by finger
nailed shaped scallops. There is a hole for hanging.
It has had a little wood worm which have now long gone.
This would have hung next to an open fire in the inglenook where it would be on
hand for cooking and also for keeping the salt dry.
It is very tactile - nieve country art.
We have left as found but this would polish up beautifully.
