Beautiful antique Victorian shiny gold mourning locket, no chain. Features a lovely enameled design on front with a bouquet of leafy white snowdrop flowers. For the Victorians, snowdrops were a symbol of consolation and hope--this was a mourning piece, a tribute to a lost loved one. The locket opens on the left with a subtle thin lip of metal to reveal an old photo of a military man, pipe in hand with a captain's hat of some sort. The photo is protected by the original covering and photo ring. The other side is quite scratched up with some verdigris (green) along the edge. The locket closes quietly and securely. The backside is composed of a very thin metal piece with an engraved design--the metal was meant to be thin and is quite fragile compared to the heavier more dense top lid of this locket. The locket measures 28mm x 22mm (1-1/8 inch x 7/8 inch) not including the loop and attached jump ring. This piece appears to have high gold content (it is a shiny piece so please excuse the reflections in the photos), but no markings to confirm. Wear from over the years includes some slight enamel wear to the front, tarnish/discoloration, some slight indentations and nicks to the metal (probably soft because of the gold content), and the inside verdigris and scratches as previously mentioned. Overall a gorgeous little work of art!
