A recent visit to the Victoria & Albert Museum inspired me to design this cross-stitch sampler with two birds in a small tree. Inspiration came from the ornamentation on a 13th century column from southern Italy, originally carved in wood.

The two facing birds seem like rather primitively carved peacocks – originally a symbol of eternal life. This would make sense, as the pattern could be seen as a little tree of life.

This pattern measures 119 by 140 stitches. Stitched on 32 count linen, this would measure approximately 7 1/2" by 8 3/4" (19x22cm).

All my patterns are available as high quality PDF files. To open these files you will need Adobe Reader, which you can download here for free: http://get.adobe.com/reader
