This necklace features a stunning blue turquoise stone from the Bisbee turquoise mine in Arizona. It is set in an unadorned sterling bezel and hangs from a handmade bail. The entire pendant is polished to a high shine and is stamped on the back with my initials and .925. It hangs from a 16 inch chain consisting of alternating oval and figure 8 loops. As always, the design is simple to highlight the natural beauty of the turquoise.

The Bisbee mine is located in Arizona and is part of an open pit copper mine. Between 1877 and 1879, a hundred copper mine claims were filed in the area and a small town, originally named Mule Gulch, was founded. The major mine in the area, the Copper Queen, was financed by Judge Dewitt Bisbee and the town was named Bisbee in his honor. In 1889, the railroad came to Bisbee and the area, run by the Copper Queen Consolidated Mining Company, became the biggest copper producing area in Arizona. In the 1950’s, the Copper Queen’s manager, Harrison Lavender, began work on a nearby hill. This open pit copper mine, known as the Lavender Pit, produced some of the finest turquoise ever seen. The lavender pit is now over 1000 feet deep and is a tourist destination. Mining operations stopped in 1974 and so most of the Bisbee turquoise on the market comes from old stashes smuggled out of the mine in the 60’s and 70’s. Workers often carried out the high grade turquoise in their lunch boxes. Bisbee turquoise is a hard, intense blue stone with, brown, black or red, sometimes smoky looking matrix. There is also some dark green Bisbee turquoise. Due to it’s high quality and rarity, Bisbee is one of the most sought after stones on the turquoise market today.
