There came a time when the lives of mushrooms and mushroom kind changed for ever. The time of the Great Upheaval, a barely remembered moment in fungi history when life as the mushrooms knew it veered off course and took a new direction. No longer were mushrooms resigned to live in one place, tied to the earth. No longer were their thoughts suspended under their bright caps, tucked away like secrets because of their lack of speech..or mouths for that matter.
The Great Upheaval changed all of that, some bright spark of Magic or Fate, it was argued both ways, swept through the forests, touching lightly upon all of the sleeping toadstools and shrooms like a glowing kiss upon their bowed heads. When it was over, like a slow blink of the eye, the world was different.
Mushrooms stared at each other across the cushions of moss, really stared, they SAW each other, they heard each other and somehow, magically perhaps, they all began to talk at once. Filling the air with their sweet, chaotic chatter.
The creatures of the woods were shocked, the trees didn't care, the sun and the moon paid no notice but the animals backed a way. Just a bit. Mushrooms were no longer considered snacks but rather charming conversationalists.
Better than the freedom to express themselves were the legs.
One by one they pulled themselves from the ground. Some slowly, dragging their newly formed feet from the moist soil that had been their only home and constant companion for so many years. Others yanked themselves free as fast as they could, stumbling and wiggling, crawling from the dirt, pushing themselves to stand upon wobbly new legs.
From that time all mushrooms that came to be were of this kind and the time of the Great Upheaval faded into history with only the vaguest recollections of the BEFORE times.
The woods have been filled with their running, sprinting, skipping and dancing forms ever since.
Mushrooms never walked when they could hop, skip and jump their way under the tree tops.
Some of them, like Twirl, spent half her life spinning. Making use of the dancer like grace she'd honed over the years. Popping straight up out of the ground each morning, her sparkling red cap catching the sunlight as she rose in the air and came down spinning.
Oh how Twirl loved spinning. The blur of life around her as she stood on her tippy toes and spun her self in circles until everything around her melted together. Until her stomach jolted with the pleasing and almost jittery sensation that had her gasping for breath. Twirl would spin herself around and around until finally her little shroom legs gave out and she collapsed on to cool moss, eyes wide, staring straight up at the blue sky that peeked between the treetops. The wobbling tree tops. Sometimes Twirl spun so much that it seemed the world still spun for a bit even after she stopped.
That was some top form spinning when that happened.
Sometimes her thoughts scrambled around her brain when she lay there, catching her breath, watching the world slowly steady it's self. Random things popped in her head, Twirl theorized that all the spinning popped those thoughts loose from the shadowy corners of her mind so they could come to the surface and be properly thought out.
The Great Upheaval bumped it's way to the top of her thoughts, how strange it all sounded. She wiggled her toes, looking down the length of her slender shroom body to her mud covered feet. A time with no legs...it was impossible surely? Just the fairy tale ramblings of the elder shrooms? It would be comforting to believe that a time of mushroom kind all being stuck in one place their entire lives, unable to run or dance or..spin was untrue. But Twirl knew, as did all the mushrooms that somehow, impossibly, it WAS true. Once upon a time mushrooms didn't spin.
Twirl sighed, half sad for the past and relieved for the present.
Well that time was over, the Great Upheaval was long in the past and she COULD move. Twirl popped up to her little feet, stretching as tall as she could, steadied herself on the tops of her tippy toes and then...she spun. Faster and faster, embracing the rush of dizzying sensations. Because she could.
