About Distinction Jewelry Fair Trade
I am a US broker for quality fair trade gemstones and rough from Kenya, and also offer a variety of fine mineral specimens and rough from other locations around the world including the United States. My fair trade items contain gems that either:

1. I am brokering for small dealers in Kenya or other countries. These gems have been entrusted to me to bring to market for fair prices in the US. When you buy one of these gems, or jewelry containing them, I immediately send 50% of the purchase price of the gem to the dealer. Not some tiny amount of the sale that constitutes a "fair wage" as paid by some so-called fair trade organizations - but an actual 50/50 share.

These stones come straight from small local operations and your purchase will mean a great deal to them. You will be a direct supporter of small, hard-working individual business owners in a country where the average per capita income is under US $800 per year.

2. Were purchased as rough at fair prices from the miner, or from a dealer very close to the source, and cut under my control by individuals or small business employees paid fair wages. For example, I might buy a piece of Oregon blue opal rough from the man who collected it and pried it out of the host rock right here in my state, and send it to a faceting artist here in the US for cutting. As another example, I might purchase a rough aquamarine from the local mining community on the ground in Namibia, bring it home to the US with me, and have it cut.

The actual jewelry making is all done by me, using recycled precious metals. I am unusually involved in the origins of my gemstones and will not sell anything I suspect was produced under unfair trade conditions. The difference in my fair trade section is that I have had enough personal control over the entire process to be *certain* that fair trade principles were respected.

The buying power of my small but successful business goes to support other small businesses in the US and abroad; the trickle-down effect of the money you spend at Distinction Jewelry has a positive impact on many people.

Your purchase will ship within 1-2 weeks; please contact me ahead of time if you need it faster and I'll let you know whether I can meet your deadline or not :) Loose gems are kept in secure storage and I will need to fetch them from the bank before I can get them to you. Jewelry items are usually made to order for you and require a certain amount of lead time before shipping.

Palladium is a platinum group metal and a superior choice for those who cannot wear silver or are looking for a more precious option. It is strong, scratch resistant, takes a high polish, and is very highly hypoallergenic.

The palladium I offer is an alloy of 95% palladium, making it a far purer precious metal than 14 or 18k white gold while currently costing about the same as 14k white gold.

Why palladium instead of white gold?

White gold is alloyed with nickle, a metal which a large portion of the population is allergic to. Most white gold has a dull, yellowish appearance similar to that of tarnished silver unless it has been plated with rhodium in order to improve the appearance and prevent nickle release. Like all platings, the rhodium wears off leaving behind a less attractive piece of jewelry that must be taken to a jeweler for re-plating. I am simply unable to view jewelry that requires plating as quality goods. For this reason, I prefer to offer silver and palladium as white metal options in my jewelry.

Should I choose palladium or silver?

Silver is the whitest precious metal, followed by palladium. However, palladium does have a slightly more steel grey appearance than silver, so your preference of color tone will be a factor. If cost is a primary concern, silver is the way to go; it's a quality precious metal at by far the lowest cost and is quite underrated as a fine jewelry metal in my opinion. Both metals are quite durable; palladium is more scratch and tarnish resistant than silver. If your skin is sensitive to the copper component in silver alloys, do give palladium a try. Palladium is also a better option than silver for newly pierced ears.

There is absolutely no glue or epoxy used in these; soldered construction and stones set using traditional metalsmithing techniques equal lasting durability. If you are paying for palladium, you deserve to get a quality product.

Gem Details and Specifications
All gemstones are genuine and high-quality - no cubic zirconium, crystals, or lab-grown faux bling here! I choose my stones carefully and I think you will find that the quality is well worth the cost.

If you don't see your choice of stone offered, or would like one of the my sterling silver earring varieties set in gold, contact me! I can source just about anything for you.

Frequently asked questions about jetflair

Our sterling silver, platinum, and yellow gold alloys do not contain any nickel. Our white gold, however, does contain nickel and should be avoided by those with allergies.
We only work with precious metals; gold, platinum, palladium, and silver. Precious metals are formed into jewelry using casting and brazing techniques, while nontraditional metals are machined. We are not set up to do machining.
If you don't see the size you want in the gem you're looking for, drop us a line! We may well be able to order it for you :)
Absolutely! We're experts at suggesting different metal, stone, and design choices to bring a ring into the range of your budget. We can often shave hundreds or even thousands off the price of a ring by making certain changes, so don't hesitate to get in touch!
We usually can! We're happy to give you a quote. A word of warning; our custom and semi-custom rings have high fixed costs that are unfortunately not tied to raw materials cost, so the price may not drop as much as you'd hope.

We have found in most cases people are prone to save up a bit and get a ring in gold, rather than pay hundreds for a silver ring. That said, we have sold a number of beautiful custom silver rings to very happy clients!
All of our listings are for two earrings by default; we'd never pull a deceptive trick like only selling you one earring! No bamboozle.

When we offer singles for sale, that is noted prominently in the item title and the first part of the description so that you can't miss it.
