Tormented, psychological autobiographical writings from Sweden' s great nineteenth century Playwright, novelist and man of letters, August Strindberg (1849 - 1912).

From the cover blurb:
' "Inferno" and "From an Occult Diary" are for the most part based on a diary that Strindberg kept between 1896 and 1908 - undoubtedly the most troubled period of his life. "Inferno" covers the time when, with "Master Olaf", "The Red Room", "The Father", "Miss Julie" and a host of other works behind him, Strindberg felt incapable of writing imaginative literature and turned instead to alchemy and the occult. Impoverished, twice divorced, deprived of his three children and almost universally despised in his native country, Strindberg suffered a major crisis. Self-dramatization notwithstanding, "Inferno" is an intensely powerful record of his mental collapse.

' "From an Occult Diary" recounts Strindberg's bizarre relationship with his third wife, Harriet Bosse, thirty years his junior. His obsession with her lasted well beyond the end of their three-year marriage; she "possessed" him, and in his fevered imagination he slept with her night after night. The closing pages of the "Diary", written early in 1908, when Harriet became engaged to a young actor and Strindberg was feeling the first pains of a fatal cancer, convey an anguish and a pathos beyond the scope of fiction.'

The cover shows a lithograph of Strindberg by Edvard Munch.

This is a 432 mass-market paperback, published by Penguin books in 1988.
the book is in very good condition with but mild signs of use (a bit of creasing to spine, mild surface rub and abrasion - nothing serious.. The book was sold new from Brown University and there is a Brown price sticker on the book's first leaf.
