Absolutely delightful little vintage leather suitcase with tooled or embossed panels featuring a map of Australia, koalas and kangaroos. Brass fittings. Made in Sydney by Artur Velan. Close ups of the other two panels can be seen here:
A totally unique, beautiful little item - I am completely smitten by it!

In the early 20th century Sydney had a thriving leather industry with tanneries mostly based around Redfern and Waterloo. In 1909 there were 78 tanneries in Sydney and even a tanning school. By the 1960s and 70s these had nearly all disappeared.

Quite a few scuffs on the exterior, the interior is in poor condition: The silk taffeta lining is badly stained (unfortunately silk taffeta is very susceptible to staining) and the internal mirror is cracked into two pieces. Although the key is lost the closure still works fine, handle is fine and there is no damage to the stitching of the leatherwork. Still entirely useable!

Measures 36cm (14") wide, 26cm (10") high excluding handle and 13cm (5") deep.
