An antique English stained glass fragment; once part of a stained glass church window, c. 1860, Victorian Gothic Revival.

Beautifully hand-painted by a Victorian stained glass artisan, the piece is a classical Corinthian column, ornately decorated with symbolic motifs - the sacred oak acorn ~ in stains of deep yellow (silver stain) and brown oxides, kiln-fired to last hundreds of years.

A wonderful piece of historic England, the stained glass draws upon ancient English motifs and symbols for its ornamentation and meaning: the medieval Tudor rose, set inside a pattern of diamonds and the sacred oak and oak acorn - ancient symbols of strength and endurance, protection, longevity, humble beginnings, patience, faith, success and stability.
The spiritual appreciation of oak since antiquity did not cease with the advent of Christianity; when the churches were built on sacred groves of oak trees, the oak acorn was adopted by the church to represent the trinity.

Here the oak acorn and ornate stylised oak leaves are combined with a classical column, combining the renaissance and the medieval Tudor. The colours and style are inspired by Medieval Gothic ornamentation ~ the early illuminated sacred manuscripts and the embellishments, tapestries and embroideries of the English Tudor years (1500's). The Gothic Revival was a romantic movement that looked back to to the ornamentation of the Gothic middle ages. This a lovely example of that drawing on the past.

The deep yellow is beautifully luminous and is made more intense by the use of silver stain and glazes in grey-brown, bronze and yellow ochre. It appears pale grey and silver when not illuminated from behind.
This piece looks wonderful in diffused or half light, as well as full light.
It may be displayed on a plate easel stand near a window or lamp, or, if you prefer it may be leaded up and copper hanging loops added to make it into a sun-catcher. Please contact me for details if you are interested in this option.
