This wonderful black webbed stone measures 24x14mm with a 6mm dome. It weighs 14.32 carats. It is backed for added strength and ease of setting. The variscite itself is 100% natural, personally mined and cut by us.

Variscite is a mineral closely related to turquoise – mineralogically speaking, a “hydrous aluminum phosphate” – with the distinct difference of containing no copper. Copper gives turquoise its characteristic blue color. Without copper, variscite in its purest form is white, but often it occurs in a variety of colors: green, yellow, orange, and black. Chromium and vanadium are the metals reported to give variscite its bright green colors, while iron, manganese and other metals can contribute to its other colors. Variscite from our mines in Nevada has a high silica content which gives it hardness and excellent durability for use in jewelry.

Both turquoise and variscite are very special gemstones…they are stones connected to life! Two of their main components, phosphorous (much of which comes from ancient bone) and water are critical ingredients of life. Oxygen is also a key element, oxidizing the various metals to give the stones their beautiful colors. Turquoise and variscite are truly gems dependent on a life-giving planet…rarities, not just here on Earth, but throughout the Universe! Variscite is said to have properties that help alleviate worry, provide encouragement, and inspire hope.

Because of their unique composition, each locality where turquoise and variscite are found imparts its own character on the stone. Each locality also has its own individual history. Some mines have been worked for many decades before we now have the fortunate opportunity to carry this history forward.

This Stone’s Provenance

This variscite formed in ancient seafloor shale in the area that is now known as the historic Blue Boy claims in Esmeralda County, Nevada. These claims were worked in the early 1900’s by the Los Angeles Gem Company and later in the 1940’s by John and Grace Callahan, two of the last year-round residents of the old ghost town of Columbus, NV. In the late 1800’s Columbus boasted a population of 5,000 brave souls who worked various silver prospects in the area. Today, very little of the town remains. The wood structures were burned as a reprieve from the high desert’s brutal wind and cold. Our claim is well known for its hard, colorful variscite ranging from solid emerald green to striking multi-color spiderweb patterns to pure black…and yes, we have worked through some pretty chilly days to bring the warmth of this beauty to you!

We hope you will find this stone as inspiring as we do!
