Steve threw this jar on the potter's wheel. It is about 6 inches tall and 6 inches in diameter. This domed shaped jar is enhanced by three decorative feet.

After bisque firing, the body of the jar was glazed with a wonderful rich red orange crackle glaze, that Steve makes. The lid and the foot were left unglazed.

The jar is then placed in a specially built raku kiln and heated until the glaze has melted. Still glowing with intense heat, it is removed from the kiln. This thermal shock causes the glaze to crackle.

Then the jar is placed into a container of sawdust. The sawdust ignites and produces a smoky atmosphere where carbon is absorbed into the unglazed clay and the crackled glaze.

Each piece has its own distinct crackle pattern and is unique in the way the carbon darkens the clay.

After it was raku fired, a hand sculpted bird was attached to the lid. Sue makes these birds one at a time by hand. No molds were used!

If you want to send this as a gift, we will wrap it for you in colorful tissue paper and tie a ribbon around it. We are also happy to include a personal message from you.

There are 3 felt pads on the bottom of the jar to protect your furniture.

This jar is meant to be displayed for visual enjoyment. It would make a distinctive artful addition to your raku collection, or a gift for a bird lover.

Raku fired ceramics are not meant to hold food or water. Some of our customers do use this jar as a small pet urn.
