Details

I chose birdseye maple for this journal – I love working with this wood. It is very hard, bright, and I love the striking figure. To achieve the desired feel, each piece is hand sanded repeatedly, resulting in a silky smooth surface. The finish is hand-rubbed Danish Oil mixed with a small percentage of varnish.

Distressed leather binds the edge, and is supple and smooth to the touch. My method of binding ensures that no leather edges are exposed, resulting in a book that is a joy to handle. Many people comment that they spend as much time simply holding their journal as they do writing in it.

The paper is 24 lb natural hemp paper which is archival quality and acid free, perfect for writing, sketching, or mounting. I hand tear, sew, and bind each page to create a strong durable paper block with deckled edges.

The headband is silk hand-sewn over hemp cord, creating a truly unique look. This step alone accounts for much of the time required to construct these books. There is no shortcut to doing this, which is why you simply do not find many books with hand-sewn headbands. I think you’ll find the results are worth the time.

This book is 8 inches tall, 6.75 inches wide, and 2 inches thick. There are 150 sheets, giving 300 writing pages. Each page is 5.75 inches wide, and 7.25 inches tall. This journal weighs just under 3 lbs.

About the price: each book represents the best available materials and long labor. Some ask how I can charge so much for a journal. Others, who are aware of the level of craftsmanship involved, marvel that I charge so little. I try to be within the reach of most, while still honoring the unique quality of each book.

Highlights:
- Distressed leather with curved binding.
- Silk headband handsewn over hemp cord.
- 24 lb hemp paper - acid free, archival quality, hand torn and sewn.
- Birdseye Maple panels with curved Black Walnut inlay and natural finish.
- Green decorative glass inset into front cover.

Size:
- 6.75 inches wide, 8 inches tall, 2 inches thick.
- 150 sheets, giving 300 writing pages.

Thanks!

Brandon produced a work of art for us to give as a gift to a newly married couple, each of whom had been widowed and were doing the hard work of combining their families. The journal he designed was elegant but not in the slightest ostentatious, and the calligrapher he found to do the inscription did a remarkable jog! And I was VERY glad I had had the item personalized, because when it arrived it was so beautiful that had it not clearly been intended for our friends I would have had a hard time packing it up and sending it away. We plan to give one of these journals to other friends who marry or who are celebrating a birth or anniversary. They are exquisite, and unique! Thank you very much, Brandon!
