This Matcha Chawan is glazed with my Carbon Shino and then over glazed with my White Shino. The bowl was allowed to set for 3 days before firing, this time allows the soda ash in the glaze to migrate to the surface. The Soda Ash on the surface of the glaze causes the glaze to flux at a slightly lower temperature, this combined with starting an early reduction traps the carbon in the glaze surface.

The rich smokey glaze finish of this piece records the air flow around the bowl when the glaze was drying and the volatile nature of the atmosphere in a reducing gas fired ceramic kiln.

Dimensions: 3-1/8"h. x 5-1/4"dia. @ widest point.
