The Royal Signet typewriter was made only for a brief time.
This typewriter is both a survivor of the depression and child of it.
Royal created this typewriter to be practical and affordable. There is no shift key.
It types in a san-serif italic developed for this typewriter to be easily readable.
Having no shift key this typewriter has unadulterated numbers and
letters for its glass covered keys and types all in caps.
Royal promoted this typewriter as being designed for
"children, housewives and letter writers". It really is a cool font.
Its glass covered keys are beautiful and simple. As a result of the
single function keys, it was and is a desirable typewriter
for harvesting keys (which has added to its rarity).
This is truly a rare typewriter and has become rarer with some of the
beautiful jewelry that key cutters have made.
Production numbers for this typewriter is a little cloudy,
but it seems that fewer than 20,000 were made (that is a large number,
but dims in comparison to typewriters like the Underwood No. 5,
of which three million were made).

This example would give even key cutters pause. It is completely functional, in excellent condition and is a very attractive teal color.
In the course of fixing this typewriter up, it was found that the paper roller bar
had developed flat spots from lack of use. We have replaced it with a different roller.
This typewriter has a new ribbon. When you reach the end of the ribbon,
there is a rod on the side of the machine that you push to have the ribbon run
back the other way.
The original Royal Signets were made from the Autumn of 1932 till September of 33 and discontinued by November of 1933.

It's in excellent condition and gorgeous! The teal color is bright and fresh. The keys are
beautiful. A few of them show very, very light discolorations. There is some oxidation on
the metal behind the ribbon guide. The platen has impression of letters and
numbers from many, many years of use. There is a very thin shallow crack in the platen
on the right side (looks more like a cut from an exacto knife).
The space bar has many small light scratches on the surface,
consistent with normal wear from use.

The case has worn edges, causing missing faux leather surface. It's impressed
with a faux alligator skin finish. There is rust on the latch, hinges and strap lugs.
There is a dent in the edge near the front latch, visible when the case is open.
There are areas paint residue and overspray on the surface.
The strap is present and in good condition. It has normal surface wear and
light surface cracks consistent with age. Don't carry the case by the strap, though.
You never know when any antique leather strap will give way.

This is a very, very special rare typewriter. You and I may never see another one.
It's an exceptional collectible typewriter and an exciting addition to your
antique typewriter collection.
