This “wax jack,” as it is known, was found by us in a little shop in Spain, and I immediately fell in love with it. Although not nearly as old as it looks, this vintage iron wax jack is more like 40 years old and is now looking for a new home.

The coil wax fits onto the base structure, with the end wick exposed by slipping through the hole on top. Light it with a match and you’re all ready to seal your envelopes or documents just as people, mostly aristocrats, did in the 1700s when these wax jacks first seemed to appear.

Early, more valuable ones were frequently made of silver or brass, and collectors have just recently started putting them on their “want” list.

The legs are riveted to the round base which is marked “Spain.” This is a very unusual desk accessory!
