~ Vintage English Christening Gown with Lavish Embroidery~

I fall in love with each of my Christening gowns...each one has its own 'personality' and charm just as all babies do.

I must admit that I am particularly fond of this lovely English gown. When I found this gown in England sometime ago is was dirty and yellowed. I rescued it as I could see its fine quality and that it was just covered in beautiful hand-worked embroidery. Now after much soaking and gentle washing this gown has re-emerged as the lovely thing it was when first made...fresh and beautifully white.

This gown has been entirely handmade of fine cotton batiste and covered in English style embroidery or what the French called 'Broderie Anglaise' . Covering the bodice and all down the center front panel, rows and rows of embroidered ovals frame little flowers. This gown has the classic ruffles (or 'robings') that frame the center front panel and which fly over the shoulders and then cascade down to the hem. These ruffles have been edged with more fine open-work embroidery which is really like lace. This same motif edges the hem of the gown all the way around the very full skirt. Again I emphasize that all the embroidery work on the this gown as well as all the sewing is hand done.

This gown measures 18 inches around at the underarms and 18 inches around at the slightly raised 'waist' . There are also two tiny mother-of-pearl buttons at the back of the bodice along with the traditional ties. The beautifully made tucks at each side of the center back attest to the fine quality of the sewing of this gown. The long sleeves measure 8 inches and 5 inches around at the openings which are edged with fine Valenciennes lace.

This lovely gown measures a very long and rare 44 inches from the shoulder to the hem. Usually these gowns measure about 36 to perhaps as much as 40 inches long so this one is truly exceptional for its long length. This will give it a gorgeous full sweep when baby is carried to the altar.

Because we cannot assign sizes to these vintage items, please check your measurements carefully. We can say that we believe this gown would likely fit a baby of about 3 to 9 months and perhaps a few months beyond according to body type.

This gown is now in excellent vintage condition, clean and white. You will find a few tiny and finely made repairs in the folds of the skirt but you will have to hunt carefully for these. Also there are a few tiny pin-prick holes at the back of one sleeve and here and there you will find a few little breaks in the edging embroidery...but truly nothing serious. The front vee-shaped bodice has had a piece of pale cream silk carefully stitched inside as lining...I do not know if this was original or not. Also I think the neckline probably originally had an edge of fine Valenciennes lace such as edges the sleeves. This could easily be replaced.

As always I suggest that a petticoat be made to wear under this gown. This will protect and support the gown and give it added 'body' and as well will help show the embroidery to best advantage. This would be a simple matter for any good seamstress...perhaps a doting grandmother.

This lovely and unusually long Christening gown will come to you freshly hand laundered using fine French hypoallergenic soap and will be ironed, fresh, clean, white and ready to use.

The price I have given this gown reflects the few issues I mention which are genuinely not serious...and also the fact that I myself did not pay a large amount for this gown...so I pass that along to you. But the price does not reflect the fact that this is a truly fine, handmade and lavishly hand embroidered antique English Christening gown...frankly this is a bit of a 'bargain'...

This fine and truly beautiful English Christening gown is exceptional for its lavish embroidery and its length ... and will surely be treasured as a family heirloom for generations....or it would be wonderful for dressing a favored Teddy or Dolly.
