This is an exquisite antique Victorian stained glass panel, depicting the hands of a mother and her baby ~ the Madonna and Child. The glass fragment dates from the late 19th century and once formed part of a church stained glass window.

This beautiful historic artifact is skilfully crafted by a stained glass artisan of the Gothic Revival movement in England. It is a fine example of the craftsmanship at work during this time.
The piece has the feeling of having been lovingly handmade - which adds to its beauty ~ being made from hand rolled, hand cut and hand-painted glass.

The painting is beautifully executed. The artisan has sensitively conveyed a sense of love and intimacy between the mother and newborn child; showing the mother's hand holding the newborn against his white swaddling clothes. The two hands are positioned so as to emphasise both their sameness and difference ~ a lovely touch being the mirroring the bent fingers on both of the hands ~ and, the contrast of sizes that emphasises the bond between the mother and child.

The techniques and materials are also used to emphasise this theme. The hands are painted in glazes over silver stain in soft, warm hues; using gently curving hatch marks, softened with a squirrel-hair brush.

The Gothic Revival was about looking back to the Gothic Middle Ages (1100-1500) and was a romantic drawing upon the past. The purity and simplicity of the hands of the Madonna and Child, with their quirkily bent fingers, are influenced by the iconography of the 1500s which had begun to depict religious figures in a more intimate and humane manner.

The piece looks exquisite in both direct and indirect light. As you can see, it is ever changing depending upon the light source. In diffused light it appears softer, with pinky-mauve or soft taupe/beige hues. In direct light the contrast of the hues are heightened; the browns appear almost black, the pale greens and pinks become fresher. It is beautiful in all types and degrees of light.

The piece is in excellent condition, especially given its age.
It measures 6 x 8 inches.

This is a unique and special piece of architectural history. It is truly one of a kind and has a beautiful presence. It would make a special gift for parents of a newborn baby or a Christening gift and will also appeal to lovers of religious and saintly artifacts, sacred art or authentic historic objects of beauty.
